Manny Delgado: “Manny Get Your Gun” S2, E8

Another character who is a prime example of Butler’s gender theory is Manny Delgado. This is due to the fact that Manny doesn’t conform to a stereotype which makes his character rare and exclusive. Manny is presented as a child with an old soul and mature mindset. For example, he does not possess the qualities of a ‘typical child’. Such as, he writes poetry, enjoys baking and is very passionate about self-care. This relates to the theory of (Butler, 1990) as she states in her book ‘Gender Trouble’ that gender is reinforced as a binary view of gender relations in which human beings are divided into two clear-cut groups, women and men. Rather than opening up possibilities for a person to form and choose their own individual identity. This correlates with Manny’s character, as he builds his own identity even though his family comment on it not being “normal”. Throughout the series Manny is shown to be more mature from a young age right the way through to adulthood. This is another example of how Butler’s theory applies to ‘Modern Family’.
